Terry Pratchett"s Discworld series. Robert Jordan"s Wheel of Time. Terry Goodkind"s Sword of Truth (though the writer"s extreme republican POV is really showing through in these books). P. J. O"Rourke and Al Franken (conservative republican political humor and liberal democrat political humor). Tom Clancy and Larry Bond"s espionage and military fiction. David Poyer"s naval fiction (good fucking stuff, if you read). History--I have books on the history of the catapult, chemical and biological warfare in the ancient world, the history of food preservation, the Spartans of ancient Greece, the history of money and banking in Europe in the 1100s-1300s, and a lot more.
